Petrophile pedunculata is possibly more common in some areas than we realize. Many of us have probably passed it by thinking it to be Petrophile pulchella. On looking more closely we can find differences. Petrophile pedunculata has the characteristic peduncle/stalk holding up the coned fruit, the cones are smooth and hairless, the flowers are a deeper yellow and the leaves less dense or upright than those of its relative. It flowers in November just a little ahead and then overlapping with Petrophile pulchella until January.
This plant may grow to 2.5m but rarely reaches this height and its shape and thickness can be well controlled in a garden. It is found across the range of the Blue Mountains on sandy soils in open forest and on heath.
