Banksia marginata is a variable Banksia in appearance in that the leaves may be from 3cm to 10cm wide and 2cm to 6cm long. They are blunt ended and may be toothed or entire. They are dark green above and velvety-white below. The pale yellow flower spikes are small being about 4cm to 6cm tall and they are silvery when young which with the white of the undersurface of the leaves gives the silver appearance as reflected in the common name. The flowers are profuse and are seen for at least the first half of the year and often at other times.The dead flowers remain on the cones for a long time.
This is a lovely bush or small tree which will respond well to pruning to control its size and density. Ideal for many gardens being widespread through the mountains, frost hardy and liking full or part sun. Its plentiful production of nectar attracts many species of nectar feeding birds.
