Although not actually a member of the wattle family Callicoma serratifolia joins some others in having the common name of Black Wattle. This is because the long straight stems were used in early days to create the wattling for wattle and daub walls. The bark often looks black. These shrubs grow 3 - 4 metres high and 2 metres wide. (In especially good situations they can reach up to 10m)  They have large pale green serrated leaves and in spring the flowers are large balls of pale yellow stamens which resemble wattle flowers. Found from the Lower to the Upper Mountains Callicoma serratifolia prefers some shade and damp ground. They are fast growing and are often found at the side of bush tracks. These are an excellent screening plant. This plant is frost tender when young. The young leaves can look quite bronzed and are very attractive.
