This handsome rainforest tree can grow to 25metres but is fairly slow-growing. It is found in rainforests and damp gullies of the mountains, even in Blackheath, and also down into the Megalong Valley. Related to the NSW Christmas bush (Ceratopetalum gummifera) it "flowers" in late spring to summer, but the showy part is actually the sepals which turn pink as they mature and make an attractive display into the autumn. The trunk  has distinctive horizontal marks, or scars, which often encircle it. Larger trees may have short buttresses. .

Its timber is beautiful, light and easily worked. It is used for flooring, furniture and cabinetwork, interior fittings, turnery, gun stocks, wood carving, veneers as well as spars and masts  for boats. Courtroom number three of The High Court of Australia is beautifully and completely furnished with coachwood timber. So much was harvested for these purposes that there are few large trees remaining.
