If you have a damp grassy area, a pond, a gully, a creek on your property, the clumping perennial sedge Gymnoschoenus sphaerocephalus will form lovely mounds with round white flower heads on long stems that wave and dance in the breeze. These “buttons” ripen to a yellowy/brown colour and remain for many months.
They are 15-20mm diameter and extend beyond the 1m height of the leaves. Flowering is from October to May.
Spaced clumps form delightful tussock areas in swamps of the Blue Mountains.
The Button Grass tussock areas are most well known in Tasmania, but are also found in damp areas from Northern NSW down to Victoria.
