A shrub to 2 metres tall usually but can reach 5 metres, spreading to over 2 metres wide, but can be pruned into a dense bun-shape. It needs a well-drained soil, which can be sandy or heavier and prefers an open sunny spot. Suited to dry slopes, plants can suffer in wet periods over summer without very good drainage. It makes a good screen plant and the sharp points on the leaves provide protection for the nests of some smaller species of birds. The white or creamy flowers appear from winter into spring. Its large warty looking seedpods have two small horns. It is naturally found only in a small area around Sydney, with records from around Kandos, south to Lithgow, Katoomba and then east to Sydney. An upper mountains form, smaller with yellow flowers, has now been given its own name, Hakea pachyphylla.
